The ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships are coming to Hamilton, Ontario, April 10-11, 2015 at the First Ontario Centre (formerly Copps Coliseum). This will be the third time that Canada has hosted the event (with previous events hosted by Ottawa, 2003, and London, 2007).

The number of entries for each country is determined by the previous year’s Championship results. Typically the event features over 20 teams from more than 15 countries and with over 400 athletes. Canada has qualified two teams for this event, and these teams will be selected at the 2015 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships in Quebec City, February 27 to March 1.

Current Canadian Champions, NEXXICE, from Burlington, Ontario, have won three consecutive World silver medals, and in 2009 became the first (and only) team from a country other than Finland or Sweden to win the World Championships.

All event tickets for individuals for this event will be available for sale on December 10th.  Group sales for groups of 15 or more are on sale now!

Please see the Skate Canada website for more information.

NEXXICE: ISU World Champions

Team Canada 1 (NEXXICE Senior, of Burlington) captured the 2015 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championship on April 10-11 at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton.

NEXXICE took a 0.67 point lead on the Friday, with a score of 71.06, winning the Short Program with an energetic and entertaining performance skated to “Mud” by Canadian Juno Award winners, “The Road Hammers”.

On the Saturday, skating in front of a large and vocal hometown crowd of over 7500 (the largest North American crowd ever to watch a synchro event), NEXXICE mesmerized the audience with a beautiful Free Program skated to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, scoring 143.67 for a total of 214.73 to capture the Gold Medal.

Team Finland 1 (Marigold Ice Unity), second after the Short Program, also scored 143.67 in their Free Program, and were declared winners of the Free program based on having the higher PCS score, but it was not enough to catch NEXXICE for the overall Gold.

Team Russia 1 (Paradise) capture the Bronze medal (their first at a World Championship), and Team Canada 2 (Les Supremes, of Montreal) finished in 6th place (moving up from 7th after the short program with the 4th best free skate).

With this victory, NEXXICE has now won the World Championships twice (the first time being in Croatia in 2009), and they remain the only team outside of Finland and Sweden to have won the World Championships.

This was Canada’s third time hosting the Worlds Champioinships (with previous events in Ottawa, 2003, and London, 2007).

NEXXICE is coached by Shelley Simonton-Barnett and Anne Schelter, and managed by Debbie Beauchamp, Fran McLellan, and Kathy Psutka.

The team consists of:  Shannon Aikman-Jones, Maria Albanese, Ellie Beaudoin, Emma Bonafiglia, Kelly Britten, Courtney Broadhurst, Lee Chandler, Alessia Chiovitti, Carla Coveart, Samantha Defino, Courtney Gray, Yu Hanamoto, Renata Khuzina, Victoria Kwan, Kristen Loritz, Nichole Manahan, Elizabeth Mayers, Caitlin McKinnon, Victoria Smith, Kiersten Tietz and BeckyTyler.

Skate Ontario Strategic Plan Feedback

$

0

Representatives from Skate Canada, Skate Ontario, the four Ontario sections, the Provincial Government, and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) held a one-day strategic summit in Toronto on February 21, 2015. Out of this meeting, the Ontario Sections Organizational Working Committee was struck.

The Skate Ontario Board of Directors, inclusive of the four Ontario Section Chairs, has approved the Ontario Sections Organizational Working Committee Terms of Reference. This committee will inventory the physical, intellectual, programming, and financial assets found within Skate Ontario and the four Ontario Sections of Skate Canada. Once the inventory is complete, the committee will evaluate how cost and delivery efficiencies can be realized and operating procedures can be improved. This work should lead to a new, improved operating structure that aligns with Skate Canada’s Strategic Plan.

Members of the Working Committee will be selected based on core competencies including: financial, legal, governance, marketing, skating volunteerism, human resources, and technical expertise. The committee will begin this important work in May 2015, with completion targeted for no later than May 2016.

The committee has no authority to approve or adopt a new operating structure. Committee oversight and the authority to approve the resulting strategic plan rests with the Board of Directors of Skate Ontario, which constitutes the President, Past President, and the chairs of the Ontario Sections.

Skate Ontario wants to ensure that all stakeholders in Ontario have an opportunity to ask questions, and to offer suggestions and comments throughout this process.

We encourage you to contact us by following the link below and filling in the feedback form. All inquiries will be responded to within 72 hours.

Giuliana Corsini, a 10-year old Pre-Juvenile skater from the Hamilton Skating Club, will be featured in an upcoming episode of the new TVOKids show “Sports Lab”. Sports Lab will examine the relationship between science and sport, and will air 26 episodes, each featuring a different sport. The show will debut on Monday, June 22nd, at 6:30pm, with new shows airing every Monday and repeats on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

20150129-0070

Sports Lab is hosted by Nykeem Provo and the Figure Skating episode will feature Giuliana and coach Bryce Davison, along with skaters Alistair, Brooke, Caelin, and Chloe (also from the Hamilton club). Giuliana, who is coached by Jen Jackson and Bryce Davison, would like to be a Pairs skater, and dreams of being in the Olympics someday.

20150129-0227

Filming was done at the Hamilton Skating Club on January 29, 2015, and Skate Ontario was there to capture some “behind-the-scenes” photos that we are excited to share with you.

20150129-0146

The air date for the Figure Skating episode has not yet been determined, but the first few episodes will likely feature summer sports (especially with the Pan Am Game coming up in July). We will let everybody know when the air date has been set! Congratulations to Giuliana and the Hamilton Skating Club!
