Skate Ontario is pleased to announce a summer competition initiative that will send a team of athletes and coaches at the Pre-Novice and Novice levels to a Skate Canada Summer Series event outside of Ontario. The selected event will be Wild Rose in Alberta (August 2–6, 2018). This initiative is designed to simulate national and international competition travel, as we will travel and stay together as a team. Skate Ontario will conduct tryouts in 3 locations across the province in May to determine the final team selection.
This program will include singles and dance disciplines from Pre-Novice and Novice levels. To be considered for the team, the athletes should meet the following minimum requirements:
Pre-Novice Singles:
- Double axel in isolation
Novice Singles:
- Double axel in isolation
- 1 Triple jump in isolation
Selection Process:
Tryouts, based on overall numbers, will be held in the following locations:
- Ottawa – May 3, 2018
- Whitby – May 14, 2018
- Paris – May 16, 2018
(Skaters may choose one of the three locations that best fits their schedule.)
Skaters will be asked to perform the following elements in isolation:
Pre-Novice & Novice Singles:
- Double axel
- Any triple jumps
- Spins from short program
*All skaters will skate their elements in isolation. Following the elements, a selection of skaters will be asked to skate their short program for the panel.
Pre-Novice Dance:
- Demonstrate the Blues
- Free dance with required elements
Novice Dance:
- Demonstrate the Argentine Tango
- Free Dance with required elements
*The selection panel will consist of Skate Ontario Sport Department staff.
Application Process:
All skaters wishing to be considered for the team will be required to complete the online application. Please use the following links to access the application form:
An application fee of $30 is payable with the online registration form.
Application Deadline:
- Ottawa location – April 23, 2018 at 4:00pm EST
- Whitby & Paris locations – April 30, 2018 at 4:00pm EST
The Team:
The team will be comprised of 16 athletes and will be selected at the discretion of the selection panel.
Team Details:
- Skaters and coaches will travel as a team to the event
- Skaters will share a room with another Ontario skater
- Skaters and coaches will be responsible for their own meals
Skate Ontario will be responsible for the following:
Skaters:
- Airfare
- Competition entry fee
- Hotel
- Rooming assignments
- Providing two team leaders – one female and one male
- Ground transportation from the hotel and to the arena
Coaches:
- Airfare
- Hotel booking
- Ground transportation at event
All skaters and coaches selected for the team will be notified by email on June 1, 2018.
